  • In a side-street on the east side of Echigo-Yuzawa station you'll find a hidden gem, this Ramen restaurant serves hearty miso, soya, salty and other types of ramen that's a welcome sight on a cold winter's day. They also have a variety of gyoza (we like the garlic ones) and several dishes on the wall that we found out are 'evening only'. Don't forget to try the exceptional char-sui pork. Seasoned eggs (tamago): 100 yen. Getting there: go out the east exit (down the long escalator) at Echigo-Yuzawa station and turn left, continue through the carpark and down the street (runs parallel to the station) about half-way along, on the right.

What is YukiGuni?

Snow Country (雪国 YukiGuni) is a term derived from the title of the novel by author Yasunari Kawabata. Considered a classic work of Japanese literature, Kawabata was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature for this work in 1968. (wikipedia)

Kawabata wrote the novel when staying at the inn, Takahan, located on the hill at the north end of Onsen Street, in Yuzawa. His room is preserved as a museum and is open to the public.
