Your Ming Gua is like your ‘Guardian Angel’. It is not you, but a ‘spirit’ that looks over you and can influence you with its personality.
The best way to find your Ming Gua is to calculate the formula yourself.
This is because in most software programmes Ming Gua 5 is not included. For instance, if you are a female born in 1963, you will calculate as Ming Gua 8 in software. However, using the following manual calculation, you become Ming Gua 5:
- The year commences (approx.) on the 4th of Feb. every year. If you are born before that date, remove one year from your year of birth, so if you are born in January 1995, take 1994 as your year of birth.
- Ming Gua 5 female becomes Ming Gua 8 and Ming Gua 5 males become Ming Gua 2. That is because there are eight Trigrams and nine numbers; 5 does not have a Trigram, so it takes on the qi of the other two earth stars. However, I have found that a Ming Gua 5 person does have a distinct personality, as described below.
Here is the formula:
Add together all the digits of your year of birth:
For females, add 4
For males, subtract from 11
eg 11-1=10 drop the ‘0’ to leave 1
So females born in 1972 are MG5 and males born in 1972 are MG1.
Each of the Ming Gua are related to one of the Trigrams, and have distinct personalities and characteristics as follows:
Ming Gua 1
Water represents wisdom and love and shows a person with an easy going nature, who may experience a few ups and downs emotionally but is also very wise and intelligent.
Ming Gua 2
An Earth person who loves to help others, often to the detriment of themselves. They may build up tension in the body as a result so it is advisable to do some physical exercise often. Responsible, hard working, reliable, diligent.
Ming Gua 3
Wood is entrepreneurial, striving for success, driven and always coming up with new ideas. Bored easily, competitive, argumentative.
Ming Gua 4
A Wood person who brings wealth to the household. A person who is creative, artistic and/or academic.
Ming Gua 5
The Emperor, an Earth person who loves to be the centre of attention, can be a bit of a tyrant, needs to be mindful of being diplomatic. (Males also see Ming Gua 2, females Ming Gua 8).
Ming Gua 6
Metal is career success, the head or the boss of an organisation (or family), someone who is very focused on their goals, success oriented.
Ming Gua 7
A Metal person who likes the finer things in life, loves to talk and must be careful of being too talkative or unknowingly, being offensive by accident.
Ming Gua 8
An Earth person who loves stability, is reliable and can be a bit stubborn (a trait found in all Earth people). Can work well on their own, stable.
Ming Gua 9
A lively Fire person who is bright, brilliant and clever but can be a bit pushy or nosey at times. Good with ideas, outspoken.
